Carlton Toews, 51, the self-proclaimed “forever young man” is also the long-time founder and director behind “Project Help;” a not-for-profit organization that builds HOMES & SCHOOL CLASSROOMS in Mexico and Haiti.
Since 1981, Carlton has been hosting projects in many parts of the world. January 2009 marked 199 host projects providing homes, classrooms, community churches and wells for the poor people of Mexico, Haiti and Kenya.
A Lutheran Minister with the Canadian Assoc. of Lutheran Congregations, now retired from 30 years of Youth Ministry 1980-2010
Happily married to his wife Catherine, a first grade teacher, Carton is also father to two sons: Chris, 26, and Andy, 24, a special needs young adult. When Carlton isn’t building homes in Haiti or Mexico, he is enjoying life in his home on Cultas Lake, BC hiking and taking photos or wakeboarding, kayaking, painting or playing guitar.
“I am excited about age 50,” Carlton said in a recent interview. “I can tell you these past 50 years have been a great inspirational journey. I have travelled around the world and seen the most beautiful sights, ate the most fantastic food and I have seen and felt the pain of the poorest areas of the world. 93 per cent of humanity lives in poverty. I have spent 30-some focused years on making a difference wherever I can.”
Part of Carlton’s volunteer work in Haiti lies with the Baptist Union Mission of Haiti where Carlton serves alongside Pastor Mendelson Cesar at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Port aux Prince.
Often quoting his favourite verse from the bible, John 10:10, Carlton lives by the words: “Jesus came that we might have life and have it to the fullest.” It is these words that inspire Carlton Toews to embrace humanity with acts of love.
“I want every child possible to experience an abundant life—clean water, food to eat, a home with a concrete floor, education and faith.”
- Carlton Toews
